Blowing Your Nose In Public Is Rude

People certainly do far ruder things than blow their nose in public! Like coughing or sneezing all over all and sundry without bothering to cover their mouths, for example. That has to be one of the most common rude, thoughtless and potentially life-threatening things that people do in public. I would much sooner somebody blow their nose in my vicinity than spray their germs all over me! It’s preferable to having somebody sniffing and snuffling right next to you too. So I would have to say no, it’s not rude to blow your nose in public. That’s not to say it’s acceptable for somebody to practise their movie sound effects for a freight train, fog horn, jackhammer or bassoon into their hanky in public! (No offence intended to those who are fond of the bassoon, which I’m sure can produce much more melodious sounds than suggested here.)Even if you have a heavy cold, it’s possible to blow your nose without drawing everybody’s attention. It’s not even really necessary to go to a rest room to do this. After all, there would be many times when this would be totally impractical. What if you’re traveling on a bus, for example? You just need to show a bit of decorum and blow your nose as quietly and unobtrusively as possible. Of course, it would be a bit rude if you were blowing your nose constantly amongst other people. But then, if you have a cold as bad as that, you are downright rude to be going out in public anyway. Other people certainly don’t want you passing on your viruses to them — and that’s a far more serious issue.I think most people are more real these days and wouldn’t be offended by something as essential as blowing your nose. Mind you, there are still those who can be precious about the most trivial things — and certainly in this day and age people are more inclined to be stressed and react with intolerance, irritation and annoyance to all manner of minor things. Perhaps the rude ones are not those who blow their nose but those who would glare or comment on it. Until medical scientists come up with a genuine cure for the common cold and all it’s variations — as distinct from the thousands of products that merely mask the symptoms — I think we’ll all just have to accept that person blowing their nose near us — and just be thankful if they keep it in a moderate decibel range! But even if they don’t, I suspect the hoons driving down the street with their “doof-doof” music shaking every house they pass will cause more sound pollution and damage more ear drums! Now that’s what I call rude!
